Into the Depth
Pauline Christina Clarkson
Acrylic on canvas
36 x 48 inches
My medium is acrylic on canvas. Key highlights of my work are shapes and colour, line-making, collage and various markings.
Although the painting I have submitted is a bit smaller than what I usually work with,
I personally love this painting — not just because it has garnered a “best in show” mention, but because of its interesting colour palette — which juxtaposes
strong earth tones with the gentleness of soft lavender, and dark spaces with high-key accents.
I use camouflage to create layers in small spaces — resulting in interesting dimensions that both reveal and hide. This invites the viewer to come back and investigate further.
One of the artists who inspired me in this technique was the abstract expressionist and war artist Syd Jacobs, who camouflaged military equipment in his war paintings.
I have also found great inspiration in the work of the Russian abstract painters.
