Open Juried Exhibition

Dear Viewers,

Welcome to the 147th Annual OSA Open Juried Exhibition! Every year I look at the work that has been juried in to get a sense of where artists and jurors are finding common ground. This year, more than in previous years, there is a focus on portrait and humanity: the faces we love and the spaces in which we exist.

This focus was not planned and yet, in this unsettled time of the pandemic and shifting geopolitical winds, the works here hit a raw note and satisfy. Collectively they are both a response and a promise. They answer our fears with the reassurance of the familiar; pit isolation against relationships and point to important spaces and the comfort they provide.

A positive thread runs invisibly through these artworks and pulls them together with optimism. It leads us through mourning and grief, onto reflection and insight, and finally to contentment and growth. As the works are arranged alphabetically by the artists’ first name, I leave it to you, if you wish, to place each one along that continuum. At the same time, every work here has been juried in because it can stand on its own, and a single click on any one of these images will enlarge it and allow you better viewing.

For this stunning show of contemporary art, our jury consisted of these three esteemed artists:  John Bingham, Photographer; Ron Bolt RCA, Painter; and Cathy Groulx OSA, Painter.  Together, they selected 82 works from over 372 submissions.

I extend sincere thanks to Kim Atkins, Lisa Murzin and Sue Ennis for chairing this exhibition and to Alan Douglas Ray for putting together the digital gallery. This exhibition could not have happened without their dedication and skill.

Please notice that most works are for sale. If there ever was a good time to support a living artist, now is it. In person viewing of particular works may be possible if requested.

Clare Ross
OSA President
